We build our own websites
A Workshop in two parts, in English and for FLITs only
In this workshop for beginners, you will learn everything you need to know about setting up a website by actually making your own website with WordPress. You don’t need to know what WordPress is, or how a server works, or what the difference is between HTML and CSS is; we will cover it all! Besides what we learn in the workshop, we will also cover resources online, so you can find answers to your questions and keep learning and building your website after the workshop is over.
The workshop will be split into two days. The first day we will learn what a content management system is by learning how WordPress works, what a server is and purchasing a server account with a URL (website address) and dedicated email address, and have an introduction to HTML and CSS. The emphasis of the second day will be working on your individual websites, so you will learn what you need to work on your own site. I will be there to answer questions and also to show people resources they can use to find the answers themselves. At the end of the workshop you will have a website online.
Note on purchasing a server account:
You are free to purchase your server account through any company you like, but I will demonstrate how to set up a server account through www.one.com. It will cost approximately 29 euro (payable through credit card or paypal). I host my own website through them and have had a good experience. The price is low, the service is available through many (European) languages, and they power their servers with wind energy.
When: Sa, 16.11. from 10.00 to 13.30 (part one)
and So, 17.11. from 10.00 to 13.30 (part two)
Where: NIG, Inst.f.Politikwissenschaft, 2. Stock
Registration: required; max 20 participants, FLIT only.
Please bring a laptop, text and/or images for your website, and a pencil and paper.

Lg.Elka
Hi Elka,
We’ll be purchacing a server account from https://www.one.com at the begining of the workshop. This will be a shared server account. Because the workshop is for beginners, I don’t expect people to need the advanced features of a virtual server, and a shared server is less expensive. But of course you are free to use whatever server will meet your needs!
What is important for the workshop is that you have the basic requirements for installing WordPress. Your host needs PHP version 5.2.4 or greater, and MySQL version 5.0 or greater. (which should be common.)
For installing, you will need to have a database, or be able to create one via the control panel. The information you’ll need about that will be the host name of the data base, data base name, username, and password. You should also have your FTP login information, as we will use Cyber Duck for uploading files. If you don’t know how to find all this information, you can write to your hosting company and ask them.
But after installing WordPress, we won’t be using the control panel that much, so it won’t make much difference if you are using a different host. I hope all of this isn’t too confusing!
